In the age of fast fashion, faster media and frenetic living, sometimes it’s soothing to just sit and stare at something beautiful. And if you love fine clothes and art as much as we do at GRAZIA, then this behind the scenes video from the Chanel atelier is just the ticket.
When Karl Lagerfeld sent fledgeling supermodel Kaia Gerber down his Chanel Metiers d’art Paris-Hamburg 2017 runway earlier this week, she looked sensational. But what is hard to garner from just a few minutes under the spotlight is the jaw-dropping work that goes into every hand-made piece she was wearing, from hat to dress to shoes.
The fabric: every pale blue brush stroke gently painted in watercolour. Every layer of sequins or beading (and we’re talking thousands here) stitched on by hand. Tiny feathers placed with tweezers then painstakingly sewed on by hand, so close together they look like silk from afar. Even the music, crisp whiteness of the atelier background and Chanel Studio Director Virginie Viard speaking French in this video is hypnotic.
