Contrary to popular belief, the fashion industry and its diligent constituents eat – and eat well.

On the first day of New York Fashion Week, what better way could there be to usher in the Spring/Summer 2017 show season than with an abbreviated taxonomy of New York restaurants frequented by models and celebrities before, during and after hours. For what finer mark of gastronomic quality is there than the approval of Irina Shayk?

Lavo
A Mediterranean restaurant meets Las Vegas nightclub not for the faint-hearted, Lavo is situated in the Meatpacking District. Owned by the team behind the Marquee, Avenue and Tao nightclubs, Lavo caters for a well-heeled crowd undeterred by big crowds, big portions and bigger lines. Miranda Kerr and Justin Bieber have been spotted here, unsurprisingly, as have Elsa Hosk, Doutzen Kroes and the undergraduate Victoria’s Secret Class of ’16. Think DJ Khaled, GoGo dancers and champagne showers and you’re heading in the right direction. Book here.

The Smile
The subterranean Bond St café and general store has become something of an institution with four outposts stationed throughout the city – one in particular, at Milk Studios, is always certain to get a work out at this time of year. Favoured by Erins both Wasson and Heatherton, head to The Smile for artfully rustic café fare and understated, dimly-lit dinners composed of nouveau American cuisine served with – you know the rest. Book here.

The Beatrice Inn
The low ceilings have done very little to deter fashion’s cognoscenti and long-limbed cavalry from The Beatrice Inn, a West Village haunt formerly owned by Vanity Fair’s longtime editor Graydon Carter, which now promises to reopen tomorrow under the direction of chef-owner Angie Mar. Photography is (apparently) not permitted at dinner, where diners ensconced in leather banquettes feast on classic chophouse fare that has found favour with Karlie Kloss, Kristin Wiig and, yes, Irina Shayk. If it makes the cut again, order the Animal Burger – a secret, off-the-menu 45-day dry-aged beef burger served at the bar; Mar only makes 10 per evening. Book here.

Carbone
For classic Italian fare with Godfather inflections and theatrical flair, you could do a lot worse than the critically-acclaimed, Michelin-starred Carbone, located in Greenwich Village. As a favourite of Kendall Jenner, Jemima Kirke and every A-lister worth their salt, bookings are best made over a month in advance for those hoping to sample Chef Mario Carbone’s contemporary take on Italo-American classics like Linguini Vongole, Lobster Fra Diavola, Chicken Scarpariello and Veal Parmesan. However, judging by Instagram, it’s the spicy rigatoni vodka that diners (Kim Kardashian, Kanye West and Serena Williams dined here last NYFW) come back to time after time, regardless of the season. Book here.

Il Buco
Another of New York’s venerable Italian dining institutions, Il Buco and its market restaurant companion, Il Buco Alimentari & Vineria sit proudly at the nexus of quality ingredients, charming decor and authentic cuisine (with the seafood in particular drawing regular praise) in the heart of NoHo. Never mind that Il Buco has consistently drawn praise over the course of its 22 year history, Chrissy Teigen, Natalie Portman and Kendall Jenner are all fans. Satisfaction guaranteed. Book here.
