If you’ve found yourself skirting around the issue of edging-up your summer look, we’re pleased to inform that this season’s hem lengths are a world of extremes. Mini skirts, ever the eternal skirt length of summer, have shrunk to practically belt-like proportions and maxi skirts have crept ever so slightly north to sit elegantly mid-shin.

Contrary to first impressions though, neither is overtly sexy or sensible respectively. In fact, these two big-time skirt lengths are transformed to their antithesis with some clever, on-trend styling.

What does that actually mean?

Micro-minis are made modest – practically office-worthy even – when teamed with a boxy tailored blazer or long collared shirt with the front tucked for effect. From the front, you look risque, from the back, utterly respectable. It’s a look that works as well with flat sandals as it does ankle boots or strappy stilettos.

Then, at the other end of the skirt spectrum, straight midi silhouettes have made a high-style comeback, minus any of the ‘lil mumsy or librarian connotations. A high waist here, thigh split there, cool fabric like worn denim or high-sheen satin, this is the perfect style to wear with this season’s dominant crop tops and heels worth showing off.

The trick is to wear the length mid-shin (midi, geddit?) where your leg thins for the most flattering effect. Case in point, model and singer-turned-blogger Natalie Lim Suarez outside the Michael Kors SS19 show at New York Fashion Week. Skirt game strong. Shoe frame, supreme.

Whether you’re at home in a short hem or looking to push your typical fashion boundaries, this season’s two biggest skirt trends certainly have legs.
