As reported yesterday, supermodel Adriana Lima is synonymous with the Victoria’s Secret brand. A veteran for 18 years, the 36-year-old recently claimed she was “going for the 20”. ( “Two more years. It’s nature. I’m working out, I’m being healthy, so let’s see how the body is going to turn out. But I enjoy it. Let’s say 20.”) It came then as a surprise to the internet when she posted a cryptic Instagram citing she was done taking jobs for an “empty cause” and went on a positive body image tirade.

“I had received a call for the possibility of filming a sexy video of me to be posted and shared in social media,” Lima began. “Even though I have done many of this type, something had changed in me, when a friend approached me to share that she was unhappy with her body, then it made me think…. that everyday in my life, I wake up thinking, how do I look? Was I going to be accepted in my job? And in that moment I realized that majority of woman probably wake up every morning trying to fit in a stereotype that society/social media/fashion etc imposed…. I thought that’s not a way of living and beyond that…. that’s not physically and mentally healthy, so I decided to make that change….. I will not take of my clothes anymore for a empty cause..” [sic].

Fans almost unanimously agreed Lima was parting ways with the lingerie giant. Further speculation was stoked when the model unfollowed Victoria’s Secret, creative director Ed Razek and all the winged angels (including best friend Alessandra Ambrosio) on Instagram. What was going on?

But, according to People, representatives of Lima have shut down rumours she’s quit VS. “As Adriana mentioned in her post she received a recent offer where she was not aligned with the direction,” a rep said. “Adriana is blessed to be able to work with all of the brands she does including Victoria’s Secret.” They have said Lima’s original statement was misinterpreted and VS was not the “empty cause”.
