Bianca Balti arrives at the premiere of Downsizing at the 2017 Venice Film Festival

A couple of years ago there was a tradition – a recently-known legend some might say – which examined the notion that the film that opened the Venice Film Festival would go on to win the Oscars prestigious Best Picture award. Last year, the Damian Chazelle directed film La La Land looked set to follow suit, only for Moonlight to buck that trend and nab the golden man in what was one of the most contentious live television fails ever.
This year in Venice, it’s Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig’s new film Downsizing opening the festival with a gala premiere to celebrate the Alexander Payne-directed film. The script has an interesting premise whereby Damon’s character, Paul, and his wife Audrey (played by Wiig) decide to shrink themselves down to less than one percent of their body size in order in order to live in a luxurious compound funded by the government. The satire is obviously taking a stab at inflation and overpopulation and also stars Laura Dern, Jason Sudeikis and Neil Patrick Harris.
Damon will return to the carpet during the 11 day festival to premiere the George Clooney-directed film Suburbicon. Jennifer Lawrence and director Darren Aronofsky will also make their first public debut as a couple for the premiere of mother!.
Stand-out red carpet looks included Kirsten Wiig in Zuhair Murad Couture, Rebecca Hall in Armani Privé, Bianca Balti in Dolce & Gabbana and Izabel Goulart in Alberta Ferretti.
