To fashion purists, the Victoria’s Secret runway event – given the thundering buzz around the location, cast and performers – is more of a costume performance than something sartorial trends are derived from or showcased.

But what’s undeniable is that the world’s biggest fashion show taps into the zeitgeist for what’s hottest at that moment in time: from the social media-savvy models to the music, styling and even where it’s staged.

A team of stylists, creatives and costume designers, headed up by former Harper’s Bazaar UK fashion director Sophia Neophitou-Apostolou, spend months before each show planning the styling of each look. Every show features up to a half dozen ‘themed’ sections where the accessories and adornments worn over the lingerie tell a story.

And the biggest news to come from the styling this year was this: Luxe Tribal

Amidst the rather predictable glamorous, vampishly sexy and baby-doll themes we inevitably see every year in the show, the one that made the most impact this year was of the high-end bohemian ilk.

The turquoise bead and leather earring/choker combo worn by Kendall Jenner at one point would look just as much at home at Burning Man or in Byron Bay, and turned what could otherwise have been sexy-siren style red lace bustier into a far more festival-worthy option. (Something, given her Coachella looks earlier this year, Jenner’s clearly acquainted with.)

So too for Barbara Fialho, who was gifted with one of the best outfits of the evening: a long sheer skirt littered with coloured pom-poms and intricate embroidery and die-for tribal headdress, both of which we now desperately want in our summer wardrobes.

If we were Gigi Hadid, we’d have asked to keep those beaded tassel earrings and gold-stitched turquoise bolero jacket. Both are a step away from her usual minimal-chic aesthetic, but begging to be worn to the next outdoor music festival she frequents with BF Zayn Malik. Snap for Martha Hunt, who was styled in the same earrings, with a floral silk kimono gown reminiscent of Aussie labels like SPELL & The Gypsy Collective.

So we’re sending a big sorry to anyone who considers high-end hippy fashion to be of man-repeller status. Luxury tribal boho is big time everywhere this season – not just Byron Bay or Burning Man.
