Some critics questioned if, in 2018, plus-size jokes were OK in movies if you tack on a moralising ending to the script. But unlike many films which supposedly flew the “body positive” flag (read: Shallow Hal), I Feel Pretty’s heroine Renee’s transformation takes place entirely in her own mind. It’s this change in attitude that makes Amy Schumer’s character lovable. After a bad hit to the head during a spin class, Renee sees herself in a whole new way; she feels confident, pretty and the most beautiful woman in the world. But for those around her – including friends (Busy Phillips and Emily Ratajkowski) and her boss (Michelle Williams) – she looks exactly the same.
