For the most part, it’s the British tabloids who are having a field day with David Beckham’s latest comments about his 19-year marriage to wife Victoria. Amid the family’s trip to Australia to attend Prince Harry’s beloved Invictus Games, the former sat down with The Project’s Lisa Wilkinson where he said his marriage took “hard work” and described the union as “complicated”.

“The amount [Victoria’s] achieved in a short space of time with four beautiful children, you know, we have a beautiful dog,” David said. “Obviously, in her business world, to be on the front cover of Vogue was a huge thing and then we did a separate picture for another cover. But to have been married for the amount of time that we have, you know, it’s always hard work.”

“Everybody knows that but you make it work, you make difficult situations, you know, like travelling away, being away from each other, you make it work,” he continued. “We’ve been married for a long time now.”

It’s definitely not a loved-up response. It’s a fair statement to say any relationship requires hard work but should he have balanced it with something a little more positive? UK publication The Sun reported Victoria visited a stress management facility in Germany as a result of her husband’s public comments. “When Victoria was given the heads-up on Wednesday about David’s interview, she was absolutely devastated,” a “pal” reportedly told the publication. “She has no idea why he would say such insensitive things and embarrass her like this in public. As you can imagine, it was as if a nuclear bomb had gone off in the Beckham household when she found out. To say it’s not been the best of weeks is an understatement.”

So what do you make of all of this? Watching the couple from the screens of your phones, laptops and televisions, do you see any truth to the rumours?

The pair married on the 4th July 1999 but their relationship, while seemingly sturdy, has come under the magnifying glass a few times. In 2004, the Beckhams were at the centre of a cheating scandal as David’s personal assistant, then-26-year-old Rebecca Loos, was accused of having an affair with the Real Madrid footballer. After being fired, she sold her story to British publication News Of The World where she allegedly admitted to sleeping with David – and detailed the explosive texts from him –  something he vehemently claimed to be “ludicrous”. “I think the problems were in their marriage long before I came into the picture,” Loos told Sky TV’s Kay Burley. “I in no way intended to break up their marriage especially when there are young children involved. I hope they stay together.”

Of the texting, Loos said, “[David] always instigated it, I would never be the first to text. You have to remember he is a married man. What if he is at lunch with Victoria? You have to wait for him.”

Then, a second woman came forward claiming she too had an affair with the popstar’s husband. Irrespective of all the allegations, Victoria stood by David. After all, they had two young sons, Brooklyn and Romeo, and would go on to have a third son Cruz in 2005 and a daughter named Harper in 2011. Together, they built the Beckham empire and today are estimated to be worth hundreds of millions.
