Popstar Justin Bieber, 24, and model Hailey Baldwin, 21, are reportedly engaged. Eyewitnesses told TMZ Bieber – longtime ex-boyfriend of Selena Gomez – proposed to Baldwin at a restaurant in the Bahamas on Saturday night.

Patrons in the restaurant were reportedly told by Bieber’s security to put their phones and cameras away as “something special was about to happen”. Despite the fact Baldwin has said in the recent past that the couple are “better as friends”, it appears Bieber’s parents have confirmed the engagements news. Bieber’s father Jeremy posted a picture of his son on Instagram with the caption “Proud is an understatement! Excited for the next chapter.” His mother Pattie Mallette simple had this to say on Twitter:

So where is Gomez is all of this? The popstar, 25, was hanging with friends on a boat in New York City when the news came in. Fans instantly began a #SelenaIsFreeParty hashtag.

Gomez and Bieber were on and off for years and while the pair tried to rekindle something in March 2018, the pair put the breaks on a reconciliation. In April, it was reported Bieber really wanted Gomez back but then things began heating up with Baldwin, whom he had dated previously in 2015 and 2016. Bieber and Baldwin were spotted kissing and partying together Friday night before the reported engagement on Saturday.

“[The proposal] kind of a surprise, but kind of not. Justin has been extremely happy these past few weeks,” a source told PEOPLE. “He has known Hailey for a long time. This might seem sudden, but they know each other very well.”

Fans have criticized the seemingly quick engagement and it was Ariana Grande who has came to the defense of Bieber, whom she shares a manager, Scooter Braun, with. “You do realize we are human being who love and have lives… right?” she wrote in a now deleted tweet. “And that Scooter is a wonderful human being too who cares first n foremost [about] our health and happiness?”

Speculation is rife too that this is a stunt similar to the one Bieber pulled ahead of the release of his single Beauty And The Beat featuring Nicki Minaj. Bieber said his computer – with some very personal footage – had been stolen at a show in Washington in 2012. A fake Twitter account was set up threatening to leak the footage and a spokesperson even told MTV News “It’s an unfortunate situation when personal property is stolen. There will be no further comment.” The single dropped soon after.

More to come.
