When it comes to Southern cuisine, there are a lot of misconceptions around the level of refinement it entails. It’s a misunderstanding chef Morgan McGlone is seeking to dispel through his culinary residency at Harpoon Harry’s and the following itinerary for the quintessential Southern dining experience.

McGlone, who worked alongside James Beard award-winning chef Sean Brock at Southern institution HUSK and brought his passion for soul food back to Melbourne and Sydney where he has opened the famous Belle’s Hot Chicken, gave GRAZIA the following picks for a feast that traverses the South’s storied past, dynamic presence and inspiring future.

Late night burgers at Holeman and Finch Public House
According to McGlone, this gastropub is a great spot for Southern cuisine famous especially for their infamous late night burger, which is widely considered the best in the South. Here’s the deal. Every night at 10pm, a restaurant staffer announces “It’s burger time!” over the sound of a white bullhorn, signalling that it’s time for the kitchen to begin taking orders for the quintessential American hamburger. Can’t stomach the 10pm rush? Thankfully, Holeman now lists its burger on the Sunday brunch menu.

Two tickets to dim sum style dining at Gunshow
One of the hottest spots in Atlanta, Gunshow is the brainchild of beloved ex-Top Chef contestant and James Beard nominee Kevin Gillespie. Combining Brazilian churrascaria-style food and the delivery carts favoured by dim sum dining, Gillespie has created a fan favourite of another kind in this industrial style cafeteria.
