They say you can tell a lot about a man by his shoes, but we think you can tell just as much about a supermodel by her signature workout wardrobe, which is easy to study given the world’s runway queens spend a large chunk of their off-duty time wearing them. (After all, those perfect thighs don’t tone themselves, right?)
If you’re looking for red carpet or personal style ideas, you look to the runway and street style for inspiration. But what if you’re stuck in a gym gear rut? Most fitness bloggers social snap themselves wearing gear they’re paid to promote, but IRL models channel their genuine personal taste in paparazzi photos, so that’s where our focus is firmly fixed right now.
The trick is to decide which sports luxe style tribe you belong to (or more to the point, would like to). Is Gigi’s retro track vibe your thing or does Romee’s head-to-top Scandi neutrals look draw you more? Do you love Alessandra’s bright boho styling or click best with Georgia’s seriously impressive lycra bike shorts look?
Whatever your answer, we give help you shop the supermodel sports look you like best here, below.
And yes, for the record, we’re aware that Selena Gomez isn’t technically a model (although fronting recent campaigns for Louis Vuitton and Coach feels both super and modellish to us), but who could pass up a look at her post-Jelena 2.0 glow as she left a Los Angeles gym late last week? Do you connect with her low-key cute-but-sexy outfit? Tell us in the comments below.
1. THE CUTE SHORTS TRIBE
LED BY: Selena Gomez
Credit: Getty Images
Sporty enough to look like you mean business, but still feminine and fashion-centric, this tiny-top-with-running-shorts duo is perfect for anyone at peace with their abs but doesn’t want to go the full sprayed-on lycra look. Despite their name, advances in compression tights mean no serious runner would actually do long distances in these shorts, but they’re ideal look and function-wise for gym sessions and power walks in sunny weather. Selena’s classic-cut, monotone look is easy to recreate, but we’d suggest adding some flair with coloured piping and a sexy-shape sports bra.

2. THE BOHO BRIGHTS TRIBE
LED BY: Alessandra Ambrosio
Credit: Getty Images
Whether we have her Brazilan heritage to thank for her carnival approach or her upbeat outlook, Victoria’s Secret Angel Alessandra Ambrosio is never short of a little pizzazz in the pants department. In this case, she lets her VSX tights (from the Victoria’s Secret sportswear line) do the talking by teaming a black and white top half that’s cool thanks to some simple but clever layering. (Time to bring back the basic ’80s T-shirt knot.) There’s an urban sportswear myth that suggests you need to be Angel-thin to wear look-at-me tights. Correction: the right print with a loose-fitting crop top can be insanely flattering. Reflective lens sunglasses are the ideal summer-fun finish. (Because LBH, who doesn’t look better after a hard workout in statement shades?)

3. THE HEAD-TO-MONOTONE TRIBE
LED BY: Romee Stridj
Credit: Getty Images
Dutch model Romee Stridj is the queen of Northern European design sensibility: she’s often spotted wearing one head-to-toe neutral hue, whether she’s walking the streets of her now native New York, on a beach, in transit or striding to the gym. But rather than being boringly monotone, the lesson here is to subtly break up the all-over colour with complementary accents. For Stridj, an all-black city look might have a metallic boot heel and chunky bag strap to mix things up. In exhibit A above, her pale tan NIKE Airs, white sunglasses and a hint of citrus yellow sports bra, save her from coming across too zookeeper.

4. THE CASUAL OG VIBE TRIBE
LED BY: Gigi Hadid

Tracksuits have been tarnished with a seriously bad name over the past two decades thanks largely to the bogan connotation. But trust us when we tell you they’re back to the high fashion world big time. For several seasons now we’ve seen wildly expensive designer track looks on designer runways, but almost always styled as a daywear look rather than something you’d actually sweat in. (Push weights in a $2000 Versace tracksuit? Unless you’re P-Diddy, we think not.) Despite having the requisite body to completely rock lycra, we love that Gigi Hadid often opts for old school street track pants and a crop top. So sexy, so cool and so easy to copy.

5. THE TIGHT SHORTS TRIBE
LED BY: Georgia Fowler
As far as we’re concerned, New Zealand-born Victoria’s Secret model Georgia Fowler can do no wrong when it comes to her street style. The same can be said for her curb-side workout looks too. Clearly committed to her fitness regime, Fowler trades fashion for function and flexibility. Don’t let Kim Kardashian’s recent penchant for wearing lycra bike shorts with heels for day tarnish their benefits when it comes to actual exercise. Georgia’s all-black look is ideal for early morning boot camps in warmer weather. (Lucky enough to sweat near the ocean? You can dive in afterward in this look too if the mood grabs you.) Black ankle socks with black shoes scream “don’t distract me, I’m in the zone”, too.

6. THE STANDOUT HERO TRIBE
LED BY: Kendall Jenner
Credit: Getty Images
Kendall Jenner is currently signed as a campaign face to Adidas Originals, so there’s little chance given her business savvy that she’d be snapped in gear from any other brand stable right now. But even before she joined Kanye on Team Adidas, she had a very similar athleisure aesthetic to this one above. Always black compression tights and a crop top or bra with training sneakers and one big-note accent piece to spice things up. Whether a look-at-me windbreaker or an off-the-shoulder cropped tee, chances are that hero piece is set aside in a gym locker the minute she steps inside. Like Kendall, we’re already big fans of these seamless Adidas pants made from a brand new type of thick compression fibre called Warp Knit that feels as good as it looks.

7. THE BARELY-THERE BRA TRIBE
LED BY: Hailey Baldwin
Credit: Getty Images
Never one to shy away from a sexy look – or showing plenty of skin, for that matter – Hailey’s impressively consistent with her signature gym look as well. Barely-there bra top, fashion-forward but still sexy three-quarter pants, plain black trainers, long-sleeved tee draped casually around the waist and perfect no-makeup makeup: what’s not to love? (Provided your workout’s entirely low impact.) This is classic Cali-girl gym glam. She owns it and we love her for it. Grey is the clearly the new gym bunny black.
