As the wind begins to change from a balmy breeze to a cool gust, as does our proclivity for perfume. For most, bottles boasting fresh citrus and sweet florals are banished to the beauty cupboard (and put on ice until the next hot summer), and notes redolent of crunching leaves and soft leather begin to appeal.

Sitting somewhere between the crispness of summer and the richness of winter, autumn scent is typically warmer in character with an earthy underbelly. From Chloe’s new nomadic offering to Maison Margiela’s swing scent; here are five of the latest autumnal fragrances to fall for…

Chloe Nomad
For the eternal vagabond, Chloe’s poetic new fragrance is one of freedom, strength and the spirit of women. A floral chypre, it has a multi-faced character (much like Autumn); an intense mineral profile of Oak Moss softens with the sweetness of the Cherry Plum, whilst freesia adds a fresh air. Inspired by the iconic Chloe Drew bag, the bottle’s soft, O-shaped curvatures contrast with the strong clean lines of its collar; again indicative of this idiosyncratic scent.

Maison Margiela Replica Jazz Club
The recent arrival of Margiela’s Replica stable in Australia means we’re privy to a whole new world of wonderful, iconoclastic fragrance. And for when the leaves fall? We’re heading straight into Margiela’s Jazz Club. A heady base of tobacco, Tonka Bean and Vetiver make for a masculine imagining of a jazz club; sweetened with a hint of vanilla and pink pepper. One whiff and you’re sinking into a leather armchair, Old Fashioned in hand, staring out through the smoke at a Brooklyn skyline. Cue the sax.

P Frapin & Cie Laskarina
As one of France’s most revered fragrance and cognac houses, P Frapin & Cie looked to their neighbour Greece for the inspiration of their latest fragrance and namely its heroine of the Greek War of Independence in 1821, Laskarina Bouboulina. An olfactory ode to independent, tenacious women; this compelling scent reconstructs a classic feminine fragrance, with its nose Amelie Bourgeois finding the right notes to create a strong-willed perfume. Bourgeois built a fragrance of character; a floral spicy jus – gentle yet feisty – reflecting the paradox of Laskarina. Like an iron fist in a velvet glove; fresh sweet notes of Bergamot and Grapefruit end in the strength of Frankincense, Black Pepper and Amber.

Malin+Goetz Leather Perfume Oil
When the weather turns, we naturally take to cosier fabrications – wool, cashmere and leather – to keep us warm. The latter is particularly in favour when the weather teeters between hot and cold, with many impelled to reach for leather jackets and the like when the climate simply can’t decide. Malin+Goetz’s latest launch is therefore the perfect addition to your fragrance wardrobe; honing in on well-worn leather as its new scent star. Sit Sandalwood, Incense and Cashmere Musk at its base, and fill its heart with unlikely florals Green Violet, Muguet and Orchid, and this rollerball will be just as essential as your leather jacket this Autumn.

100Bon Davana & Vanille Bourbon
Slightly sticky, slightly sweet; this new fragrance to Mecca Maxima reinterprets vanilla with heady gusto. A woody profile; white cedar, davana and patchouli make way for an unexpected turn of balsamic; astringent and complex, the syrupy character of vanilla is offset, whilst bourbon gives it depth. One for when both the leaves and night fall.
