It’s lucky for Zayn Malik that he and Gigi Hadid got back together after their reported break-up, because otherwise the publication of his new interview in Paper magazine would have been excruciatingly awkward.

The One Direction-er turned solo artist is on the cover of the US pop culture publication’s latest issue, and in the accompanying interview (which took place well before the rumoured split) he opens about he and his supermodel girlfriend’s low-key date nights.

“I don’t really enjoy going out too much and partying,” he says. “I like to have my own time and be at home, and I kind of need a partner with me to do that. I just like the security of that. It feels good to me. It feels right.”

When asked if he and the Sports Illustrated beauty have plans for that very evening, he’s only too happy to elaborate.

“We’ll see each other tonight and probably watch a film. Netflix and chill. Yeah, we do that a lot.”

Paper notes this comment was said “with a smile,” indicating the “Pillow Talk” singer does know the true meaning of the term – that is, to make plans for a date night under the pretense of watching Netflix and hanging out, but both parties being aware there will be a little more, er, pillow talk going on.

But apparently they do leave the house sometimes – Zayn also reveals the couple often go horse riding together.

“[Gigi] rides very well, and she has since she was a kid. She wants me to do it with her, and I’m not good. But I’m learning, and it’s fun.”

He also pays to tribute as Gigi being more than just a pretty face, explaining that he finds brains more important than beauty when it comes to a partner.

“When I learn something from somebody and they teach me something, that’s an attractive thing for me,” he says. “Obviously, I find physical appearance attractive as well, but it’s definitely squared more towards a personality as I’ve gotten older, because you can’t have a long-term relationship unless you get on with the person. It doesn’t matter really about the exterior.”

The 23-year-old seems to be making an effort to shake off his boy band persona in the Paper feature – he’s pictured blowing smoke out of his mouth on the cover, and addresses the sexual tone of Mind Of Mine.

“It wasn’t a conscious decision to make [the album] sexual or refer to sex. But I just found out that a lot of situations that I was in were quite sexual situations — all of the time.

“I enjoyed singing about [sex], clearly.”

With lyrics on Mind Of Mine including “”Be in the bed all day/ F*cking you and fighting on”, yes, that is pretty clear indeed, Zayn.
