Sometimes what goes on behind an international-spotlight catwalk extravaganza is just as enthralling as the view A-listers got from the Front Row. That’s certainly the gist following the flurry of action that happened backstage at the Zimmermann Spring/Summer 2017 show at New York Fashion Week.
While the large-scale presentation was hardly an all-Australian affair, it was primarily hot Aussie talent that ran the show. Sydney-based celebrity hair guru Renya Xydis, easily spotted across the busy backstage area via her signature pink locks, flew in to head up the hair styling team.

Creative director Nicky Zimmermann tweaked, styled and personally supervised as each girl was prepped in her look. And the standout star model of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia 2017, statuesque Roberta Pecoraro, with her signature cropped wavy locks, stole the catwalk limelight when she appeared in a cut-out white micro-mini dress, bum bag and pristine sneakers. Blonde Belgian model Ine Neefs opened the show in a tiny blue and white floral jumpsuit and the same surfy bum bag as Pecoraro.

Even the masterfully-crafted clothes themselves told a story of Nicky Zimmermann’s love for an Aussie surfside icon. “For Spring 18, I was inspired by images from the ’60s and ”70s of the sunny, beachside strip called the Gold Coast in Australia,” she says .
“I wanted to create a fresh and airy collection against this backdrop. Silhouettes are less about any era and more for their ability to carry the crisp and sheer fabrics. And I wanted that transparency for light to shine through the garment. “Prints are floral and fresh and all on white bases – they’re definitely inspired by the time.”
The styling too, had a laid-back Aussi beach chick vibe, punctuated with woven leather bum bags, shell anklets and crisp white sports luxe sneakers. “Our approach … was to see it on the runway the way we would want to see our ideal girl wearing it on the street,” Zimmermann explains.
“It’s my favourite thing to see someone wearing one of our highly detailed dresses with fresh white runners, a bit undone and just really effortless and sexy.”
This ode to the most glamorous elements of classic Gold Coast chic, aptly named the Goldentime collection, will drop in stores and online globally in February 2018. Meanwhile, you can shop Zimmermann’s current Resort 2017 collection online here.
